Liposuction (lipoplasty) removes localized fatty tissue to enhance your shape and improve your body contour.  It is particularly well-suited for women and men who are of relatively normal weight but have isolated pockets of fat that cause certain areas of their body to appear disproportionate. These localized fat deposits may sometimes be an inherited trait and typically do not respond to dieting or exercise. Liposuction is often the only way to eliminate them.

While it is possible to undergo liposuction at almost any age, you will obtain the best results if your skin still has enough elasticity to achieve a smooth contour following fat removal. When skin is inelastic, as in some older patients, it may not redrape well and a skin tightening procedure may be necessary.

Time in surgery: Varies
Time off from work: 2-3 days

Are you a good candidate?

To be a good candidate for liposuction, you must have realistic expectations about what the procedure can do for you. It's important to understand that liposuction can enhance your appearance and self confidence, but it won't necessarily change your looks to match your ideal or cause other people to treat you differently. Before you decide to have surgery, think carefully about your expectations and discuss them with Dr. Gumucio.

The best candidates for liposuction are normal-weight people with firm, elastic skin who have pockets of excess fat in certain areas. You should be physically healthy, psychologically stable and realistic in your expectations. Your age is not a major consideration; however, older patients may have diminished skin elasticity and may not achieve the same results as a younger patient with tighter skin.

How is Liposuction performed?

Treatment areas may include the abdomen, flanks, hips, chest, thighs, upper arms, and neck.  Collections of fatty tissue in the areas indicated in Figure 1 are removed through short, discretely placed incisions.

Liposuction helps to eliminate unsightly bulges by removing localized fat deposits.  After surgery, your body contour will appear smoother and slimmer.
