BOTOX® Cosmetic is a substance injected into the muscles, temporarily relaxing those muscles. When the muscle relaxes, the overlying wrinkle flattens. BOTOX® Cosmetic works best on expression lines and deep furrows, particularly in the forehead, lines between the eyes and laugh lines. The effects are not permanent and further treatments are necessary. Results are not immediate. It may take up to two weeks for the effects to take place.
Botulinum toxin injections (BTX), often referred to by the product name BOTOX® Cosmetic, is a biological toxins (botulinum toxin) transformed into a therapeutic agent. Work with BTX began in the late 1960s to treat neurological disorders. Today, BTX is used for the treatment of frown lines, forehead furrows, and “crow’s feet”. BTX injections have proven to be a very popular nonsurgical cosmetic procedure.
Are You a Candidate?
Aesthetic plastic surgeons have found that the type of lines and wrinkles that respond to BOTOX® injections are those caused by the muscles-specifically those muscles that contract during facial expressions such as frowning or squinting. BOTOX® Cosmetic temporarily reduces this muscle activity so you'll begin to notice a visible smoothing of these lines. This treatment offers:
- No downtime. Patients can immediately resume normal activities.
- Long experience has proven BOTOX® to be safe.
- Treatment is reversible within several months.
How is This Treatment Peformed?
The patient is asked to contract the muscles in the area being treated so the surgeon can determine the proper location for injection. In most cases, BOTOX® is injected directly into the muscle with a tiny needle. It takes a few days to realize the effect of BOTOX® injections.
At the initial injection, BOTOX® is placed in as many appropriate sites as necessary. The patient is then reevaluated at two month intervals and maintenance doses are placed as needed. This allows the BOTOX® to maintain its full effect while, at the same time, markedly reducing the number of injections per visit.
